Dr. Yuxin Mei spent most of his childhood globetrotting with his father and mother. His father, Ming, is a mathematician who specializes in the area of partial differential equations and took his wife and young Yuxin to explore the world as he engaged in numerous research projects. As a result, Dr. Mei lived 6 years in China, 4 years in Japan, a year in Austria, a year in Edmonton and finally settled in Montreal at the age of 11. At a point Yuxin managed to speak 5 languages fluently but a few has fleeted his memory over the years. Once in a while and despite the familiarity, the unintelligible sounds of spoken Japanese or German serve the solely as a Pandora’s box that opens up various memories of his childhood just like the lullabies his mother used to sing to him. By this time Dr. Mei senior found an adjunct professorship position at McGill University and began teaching at Champlain College in St-Lambert; thus, young Yuxin and his sister Yuying grew up in Brossard in the south shore.

Growing up Yuxin had a keen interest in sciences and debated between following his father’s footsteps to try to be the next Euclid by globetrotting or anything else that did not have to involve scribbling illegible “alpha-betas” with a pen and a pad. Seeing how arbitrary and intangible higher level mathematics can be, Yuxin chose to study health science instead and had an epiphany one day when he realized how much he liked working with his hands. All of a sudden, all the pot-hole-filled, confusing roads of life (Montreal) lead to Rome (ok… that’s not true, they actually lead to the Champlain bridge) and he found himself at McGill University’s School of Dentistry, to his frustration and surprise, trying endlessly to scribble illegible “alpha-betas” with a pen and pad. Only this time, instead of grand theorems of mathematics, Yuxin was trying to jot down everything he thought he had to know for his dental anatomy exam.

During dental school Dr. Mei enjoyed the clinical aspect of dentistry. He loved being able to interact with his patients and understood that he has a much more important role than to treat their teeth. He often plays the role of a physician, a psychologist, or a friend and always had a keen ear for his patients. In his view, ears are just as important as eyes or hands and Dr. Mei is a strong proponent of the treat the person and not the disease philosophy. As a student, Dr. Mei had tremendous interest in the fields of endodontics (root canals) and prosthodontics (implants, crowns, dentures, bridges) but loved all aspects of dentistry. He graduated McGill Dentistry with the 3M ESPE Student Clinical Award for his excellence and superior aptitude in the use of conservative restorative materials in the final year of the clinical undergraduate program. Wanting to further enhance his knowledge, skillset and broaden his horizon, Dr. Mei chose to pursue a one year residency program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of Connecticut. This experience gave him a tremendous exposure to various complex cases since the patients were referred to the University by general dentists due to the complexity of the treatments the patients needed. Like a young warrior eager to show his skills, Dr. Mei challenged himself to absorb as much knowledge so he can use creative and innovative ways to care for his patients. His work ethic, attitude and technical skills garnered him praises from his director, his peers and most importantly his patients. During his residency, Dr. Mei focused on implant surgery, complex fixed and removable prosthetic restorations and molar root canals and strived to provide the best and most complete to all patients under his care.

After his residency training, Dr. Mei returned home to his wife and decided to purchase and take over a wonderful family practice from his mentor and revered teacher - Dr. Saul Levine. Both Dr. Levine and Dr. Mei are thrilled with this opportunity since Dr. Levine has, after going through many candidates, finally found someone who he believes is capable, qualified and loving enough to take over his beloved practice that him and his wife has nurtured over 45 years. Dr. Levine and his wife, Barbara, will continue to provide assistance and mentorship for another 6 months to Dr. Mei to assure a smooth-sailing transition.

In his spare time, Dr. Mei loves to spend time with his family and friends. He enjoys organizing events and giving back to his community. He keeps fit by playing soccer and basketball during the summer and snowboarding during the winter. Being an avid fan of different cultures and food, he enjoys travelling the world to experience various local delicacies. In his other spare time, he spends hours making videos, coding and designing websites like the one you are reading right now.
